What Is SEO?

By Michael Davis

This intel will explore what SEO is, and why it's important. Let's begin! SEO stands for search engine optimization. Do not let those long words scare you. It's actually quite a simple concept once you get the hang of it.

When you build a website or a blog, it's not as easy as writing a post or page and then publishing it. You need to be aware of certain things, such as your keyword placement and usage. Search engines determine what your site is about by your keywords. For example, If you have a website about making money online, some keywords you may use are "making money online" (this would be considered a long tail keyword, since it's...drum roll please... long tailed- essentially this is a keyword phrase)"how to make money from home", and "learn how to make money online". (These are just examples of keyword phrases you could use.)

The main goal is to make sure you pick keywords that relate to exactly what your blog or website is about, so when a search engine (google, yahoo, msn, etc.) visit your site, they know what your website is about, so they know when it is appropriate to show in the search results.

The second goal of picking keywords is making sure the keywords are popular enough to get searched, but yet not popular enough to have loads of competing sites using the same keywords. This is called keyword research. (You can find a very cool tool that will do this for you at wordtracker.)

Once you know what keywords you will be targeting for your site, the next step is to make sure you have them in the specific various places on your website. This is SEO.

For example, let's take your money website again. If you are targeting the phrase "how to make money from home", You want to make sure you have that phrase in your page or article at least 2-3 times, and you will want to make sure to use that phrase as your title to either your page or your post. This is known as a title tag, and it has a lot of weight when it comes to SEO.

A very important thing to remember when it comes to SEO is making sure you are not overly optimizing. If you have your keyword (or keyword phrase) in your page too many times, you will get penalized. A good rule of thumb is to make sure your page or article is at least 400-500 words, and only use the keyword 2-3 times in it.

The next step in SEO is obtaining relevant backlinks to your website or blog. How do you get a backlink? Writing articles is one of the easiest ways you can do this. Just do a search for article directories and you will find a bunch you can submit too. They key to writing articles is to make sure you include a resource box. In this box, you will create a bio, and link back to your website. Presto, a backlink has been created! Where SEO comes into play is by using relevant anchor text (a link that are words, not a website.) So for example, same site as above, a relevant anchor text may be "make money"-this keyword phrase would be my link back to my site (you'll need to learn basic html for this code- it's easy.)

The same rule applies to anchor text- you don't want it overly optimized, so make sure you are mixing it up with different keyword anchor texts.

You can find a lot of information on the internet about SEO, so make sure you do your research on the subject. It will benefit you greatly if you learn as much as you can about it. Good luck in your endeavors, and to a prosperous website building journey!
